WebDAV provides solutions to most of the problems described
above. First, it is a public standard so it is not bound with a
specific vendor. Lots of vendors however have created WebDAV
implementation. Second, it allows an author to attach metadata to the
Web resource which can be later browsed by the users. It also improves
the way the content of a Web server is listed. Next, as an HTTP
extension it uses only HTTP messages, so it prevents administrators
from installing and configuring any other software except the Web
server.
Now a description will be given to the new methods, headers and status
codes defined in the WebDAV and how the fit in the big picture.
